A cut above the rest - training with Robert Bava

On Sunday the 27th March, Salon Express had the opportunity to work up close and personal with Robert Bava from Parlour Hair, South Australia.

Robert has over 35 years’ experience in the hairdressing industry. He holds an absolute wealth of knowledge in the hair world, having many years experience as a Platform Artist nationally and internationally. And not to mention, twice he has been Crowned Australian Hair dresser of the Year and South Australian Hairdresser of the year. Safe to say, he’s a cut above the rest.

Robert presented a Look & Learn session, followed by an up close and personal hands on session for an exclusive number of stylists from our teams across WA.

During the Look & Learn, Robert presented four different haircut techniques. All of which were innovative, on trend, and salon friendly. There was a big emphasis on current trends for 2022, so of course fringes were a point of focus. Robert used a very comprehendible and user-friendly method to present these techniques to our stylists. He encouraged our team to get hands on, bringing up one of our stylists (Michelle from Salon Express Rockingham) on stage to have a go with a cut.

As a business owner and educator, Robert understands the importance of time, value, and good teaching. Throughout the workshop, Robert had a wonderful way of engaging with our team, keeping them engaged, interested, and eager to get hands on. Robert’s way in which he worked hairdresser to hairdresser was especially appreciated. Needless to say, he certainly delivered with this workshop and our team was able to walk away with new skills to use in-salon (and very excited to do so).

Feedback from attendees.

Such an amazing day! Robert was so on trend with his hair cuts and experience. I walked away with so much information and cant wait to share these techniques with my team back in the salon. It makes such a difference to the working week when I attend education, this has put me on a high for the start of the week.

I really enjoyed the Robert Bava workshop. The Margo Robbie haircut was a favourite, as I think this will be able to to implemented on many clients in the salon. It was so great to see what is so on trend at the moment.

Beverly Hunt Salon Express Cockburn

I really enjoyed the Robert Bava workshop, it was very rich with new ideas. I will definitely be practising his modern take on the mullet. The focus on fringes was inspiring and I cant wait to encourage my clients to have something new. This workshop was so powerful and educational for me, Im feeling extremely inspired.

Robert talks trends for 2022 and gives his top 3 tips for the perfect haircut along with some takeaway tips.

Takeaway Tips from Robert

  • Always cut the hair from wet and finish when the hair is dry to personalise.

  • When a client wants a change, there are three ways to create change.

    1. Take the length shorter

    2. Create a fringe

    3. Add internal structure (Layers)

  • All shape should be created with scissors to create strength to the hair cut and finished with texturisers to create texture.

  • When creating layers to face frame, think of the features you would like to emphasis – the cheekbones, the jawline, the chin and cut your layers to that length.
